Do you remember the horror films of the ’70s, ’80s and early ’90s?
They were films made with plenty of ideas and very little money, especially when compared with the vast sums spent on filmmaking today.
How wonderful those films were.
Directors and producers wanted to create films that would draw audiences in, astonish them and shock them. And so many classics were born during that period, both in Italy and abroad.
Directors such as Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava and Lamberto Bava were the heroes of an era. Then there were Aristide Massaccesi, Ruggero Deodato, Claudio Fragasso and so many other “craftsmen” who could achieve so much with so little.
But elsewhere in the world, too, great names such as Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, George Romero and many others showed us what wild, violent and utterly unrestrained cinema could be like in those years.
In the ’90s, there was an explosion of independent productions that were almost homemade in nature, particularly in Germany, with extreme videos and ultra-splatter films. This movement had leading figures such as Jörg Buttgereit, Andreas Schnaas and Olaf Ittenbach — filmmakers who were not ashamed of the rough-and-ready nature of their productions, but instead wore it as a badge of honour, celebrating their uninhibited creative freedom, unrestrained by censorship or moral hypocrisy.
Today, those films are no longer easy to find, and you have to delve deep into the underground scene to rediscover that sense of freedom, that do-it-yourself spirit — homemade at times — that mainstream cinema has all but destroyed.
Goreproduction is precisely that: a production company, first and foremost devoted to filmmaking, which has chosen to place a passion for freedom of expression at the very heart of its artistic vision. We create ultra-low-budget horror films while always striving to do our very best to bring back to the screen the sheer joy of limitless, uncensored creativity that defined the extraordinary horror films of that bygone era.
As far as we know, Goreproduction is Italy’s first and longest-running independent “horror brand”, having taken its first steps way back in 1986 with the production of short films shot on Super 8.
Today, Goreproduction remains a vibrant and active creative force, producing feature films distributed primarily overseas, as well as books, comics and a wide range of merchandise, including artwork, action figures and stickers.
We hope that this journey back into the past will rekindle that same passion in all those viewers who choose to follow us, now and always.
